Fall Harcourt House Artist in Residence Update

The Quiet Rebuild

“The Quiet Rebuild” – my art show at the culmination of my year as Artist in Residence at Harcourt House Gallery and Artist Run Centre – officially opens in exactly one week! I can hardly believe it! The year has gone by so quickly and I have cherished every precious moment of it.

My studio has undergone massive transformations as well. I started my residency with two loveseats and now there are none as I needed every square foot. If you come and visit my studio you’ll have to sit on a painting chair… but still come! When my residency began the walls were bare yet now it seems like every inch of space has been transformed. In November 2012 I set out with delicate, two foot tall wood sculptures and now have large, nearly 5 foot high, sculptures that weigh a ton. During the year I have also painted and worked with wood burning.

So what exactly is “The Quiet Rebuild” all about, you ask?

After my son died I discovered that art was a helpful tool to work through my grief and find healing. I also learned that people struggle in similar ways after all kinds of hardships and that one of the best traits of humanity is resiliency. My artwork in “The Quiet Rebuild” is an abstracted picture of my grief and journey to find healing. I also found inspiration in others who shared their stories with me from all kinds of struggle; these brave individuals have given me permission to share their stories with my viewers. The rebuilding process is quiet, unglamorous, but needed and soulful. I hope my work in “The Quiet Rebuild” will be a visual enjoyment and encouragement to many people.

A Call for Volunteer Models

I am looking for people to volunteer to model for a fine art photo shoot. These images will be a part of my art exhibition at Harcourt House in October of this year. My body of work is called “The Quiet Rebuild.” I would like to connect with people who have experienced some kind of personal hardship from which they have had to rebuild their lives. The photos are going to be super interesting so get in touch if you are willing and able (or know someone who is!).

The photo shoot will be in August in Edmonton. Please contact me if you are interested and I will give you more information.

Artist in Residence interview on Shaw TV

Open Art Studio, Open Heart

It’s time for the Artist in Residence meet and greet at Harcourt House!

This Thursday night I will be opening my art studio in the Harcourt Annex for visitors. I will also be giving a poetry reading and doing a demo of my woodworking techniques. This coincides with Harcourt’s annual member’s exhibition; this year the theme is Kinetic. It’s going to be a great night! Also in store: a complementary BBQ on the grass in front of the gallery (YUM!) and a free life drawing workshop.

I truly love what I am working on in my studio at Harcourt House. My art is full of color and shape. Come Thursday, June 20th and see for yourself.

I truly love what I am working on in my studio at Harcourt House. My art is full of color and shape. Come Thursday, June 20th and see for yourself.

The body of art I am creating during my residency is called “The Quiet Rebuild” and is a visual picture of healing and rebuilding one’s life after hardship.

For me, the hardship was losing my second child to a cardiac tumor in 2010. Since then I have been slowly (sometimes extremely slowly) and quietly rebuilding my life. I have found that art became and remains an important tool and expression of my grief and search for hope. Everyone will find meaning in this artwork.

I am working with a lot of wood, both natural and manufactured in “The Quiet Rebuild.” Other materials I am using include yarn, Jenga blocks, paper, and acrylic paint. Oh and photography as well. I feel such an amazing connection with my art and am looking forward to sharing it with our local community within my studio, where all the magic happens!

The poem I will be reading speaks to the time I lost my son, whom we named Zachary. I am currently working on branding (burning) the poem onto wood panels. I will share more about the meaning of the poem and my wood burning technique at the demo.

Click here for specific  info about the Kinetic exhibition and Artist in Residence meet and greet. Hope to see you there!!

Artist Interview on Shaw TV

How do media people do it? Shaw TV filmed me working in my art studio at Harcourt House and out in nature taking photographs for two hours and they made an amazing artist interview boiled down into three minutes. But what amazing three minutes they are!

Fashion for Freedom a Huge Success for A21

Last Saturday saw conceptual clothing, or art-ware, walk the runway at Fashion for Freedom, an event that raised money and support for the A21 Campaign. The event was a smashing success bringing in around $7000. Poiema Productions did a fabulous job and are such a wonderful group of ladies! I look forward to future collaborations with them.

A21, which stands for abolishing injustice in the 21st Century, aims to shift the negative tides of human trafficking – a very real problem even in our day and age, even in Canada.  Jessica Corbeil shared her experience working with A21 and the importance of the issue . For more info about the campaign, visit: www.thea21campaign.org

With over 20 designers, an amazing dance performance Entrelacement Dance of the Edmonton School of Ballet and a musical number written specially for A21 performed by Jeremy Blackwood– the event was a creative smash up of amazing talent. (If you missed Fashion for Freedom this year, attend in 2014! Poiema Productions is gearing it up to be an annual fundraiser.)

Two of my dresses walked the runway. One is made out of party confetti – over 16,000 pieces of it! The other dress is constructed of shower curtain and shower curtain rings. I want to thank my amazing model, Whitney Allen! It was a pleasure!

Exposure Photography Festival held its closing party on February 28th at Endeavor Art Gallery in Calgary. The gallery is beautiful with tall walls and large windows; definitely a space I would love to have a solo exhibition in one day! At the party, VISTEK announced the awards for Emerging Alberta Photographer and People’s choice. I’m always a little disappointed when I don’t win (human nature, right!) but just to be selected for the Emerging Photographer Showcase and having my image on a billboard in Calgary are true highlights.

Artists Lens - Alberta Society of Artists - Alexis Marie Chute - Exposure Photography Festival 07

Exposure is a photography festival in Calgary, Banff and Canmore Alberta running from the 1st to the 28th of February, 2013. Their catch phrase, “Photography is the Medium of Our Times,” is entirely true from my perspective. You just have to drive a main drag in the city to see billboard after billboard of images lining the street.

Image is king.

I was recently in Calgary to attend the opening of the group exhibition “The Artists Lens” put on by the Alberta Society of Artist’s. Three of my photographs stood on easels at the center of the room, bathed in the beautiful spot lights of Artpoint Gallery. It was a pleasure to rub shoulders with the local art crowd of Calgary and even if you missed the opening, you can still visit Artpoint Gallery until the end of the Festival to see “The Artists Lens.”

While in Calgary, I received word that one of my photographs was being displayed on a digital billboard, a perk of being a finalist in the 2013 VISTEK Emerging Photographer competition. Near the airport, my husband, kids and I found the billboard! My photograph of marbles shone brightly on the overcast winter day – it was surreal.

There is a People’s Choice Award to be had by one of the competition finalists – and it involves a quick online vote.

If you enjoy my work, I would sincerely appreciate your vote!
