15 Days till the InFocus 2016 Deadline & 15 Reasons to Submit

The deadline for Alberta photographers to submit photographs to InFocus Exhibit 2016 is October 31, 2015, only 15 days away! Now is not the time for procrastination; SUBMIT TODAY!

The mission of InFocus is to promote and exhibit innovative, thoughtful, and provocative photography created by Alberta’s contemporary image makers.

The call for submissions is open to professionals, armatures and students alike. We want to see forward thinking photography that capitalizes on the strengths and subtleties of the medium and takes image-making to a new level. The goal is to exhibit the best photography from the province!

Here are 15 reasons you should submit to InFocus 2016:

  1. See your photography hung in DC3 Art Projects, one of Edmonton’s most important artistic hubs.
  2. Your work will be featured in Exposure Photography Festival, which went province-wide for the first time last year.
  3. Sell your work during InFocus. The gallery and InFocus Team will encourage art patrons to support photographers and our creative community in this way.
  4. Network with other photographers and professionals during the festival.
  5. Participation in an exciting group exhibition is a fun way to kick off 2016.
  6. Discover other image-makers from across Alberta and find a creative community.
  7. Have something cool to talk about on Facebook and Twitter other than what you had for breakfast (Although we’re sure it was delicious!).
  8. Snatch up a volunteer opportunity with InFocus Exhibit 2016 to gain experience mounting and running an exhibition.
  9. Attend a rockin’ reception party on Thursday, February 4, 2015 (7-10pm) with live music, wine and yummy snacks (and invite your family and friends!).
  10. Have your work discussed for its merits and inclusion in the show during the Curator Talk on Thursday, February 4, 2015 at 7:30pm in the gallery.
  11. It’s easy to submit your work online through our no fuss submission form.
  12. Each photographer’s Artist Statement and CV will be displayed at the exhibit to educate the visitors about your work.
  13. Have a lasting keepsake in the printed InFocus Photo Exhibit program with each photographer featured.
  14. If you entered before October 18, you have the chance to have one of your images featured in the Exposure Photography Festival magazine-style catalogue to represent InFocus!
  15. Photography is awesome!

Curatory Work Shortlisted for Promotion of the Arts Award

Curating InFocus photography exhibition was an awesome experience in and of itself, and so to be shortlisted for it in the John Poole Award for Promotion of the Arts is icing on the cake. The award is one of many given out at the Mayor’s Celebration of the Arts Awards hosted by the Professional Arts Coalition of Edmonton.

John Poole Award for Promotion of the Arts:

Recognizing an individual, arts organization, media organization or business that has promoted the arts in a distinctly creative or exceptional manner.

It is my pleasure to support the arts community in Edmonton. It is my community, my peer image-makers, artists, musicians, dancers, sculptors and other fellow creative individuals and organizations. I believe we will all flourish when we support and build each other up.

The inaugural InFocus exhibition, held during Exposure Photography Festival 2015, was a huge success! More than 200 people visited the show during its two-day run. Thirty photographers from Edmonton and area were promoted and their work championed for its artistic and technical skill. Most of the photographers were able to attend the opening and they shared their love of photography with all those who came to experience the show. The energy that surrounded the entire exhibition was tremendously positive, supportive and collaborative. Truly, we have much to be proud of.

I must acknowledge the tireless vision and execution assistance of my partner in InFocus: Aaron Chute. Without him, InFocus would not have been as technologically savvy or the artwork hung as precisely. Aaron, THANK YOU!

To those that nominated me for the John Poole Award for Promotion of the Arts, specifically Exposure Photography Festival manager Wes Lafortune and others, I wish to express my deep and heartfelt gratitude.

Attend the 28th Annual Mayor’s Celebration of the Arts, click here for tickets.

Exciting news with InFocus: Next year the exhibition will be held all month long in February at DC3 Art Projects. I’ll post more about InFocus 2016 and its call for submissions soon.

InFocus Edmonton Musical Collaboration with Mohsin Zaman

InFocus Edmonton is only four days away! The group photography exhibit will be an amazing presentation of the creativity and vision of Edmonton and area photographers and artists.

I am excited to announce that Mohsin Zaman will be playing his music at our opening reception Saturday night, February 21st. I love supporting local musicians. I believe collaboration across artistic disciplines benefits us all. Plus, I’m really excited to listen to some awesome music while looking at great art. Sounds like a perfect night.

Please join us!

Get to know Mohsin Zaman:

From the bustling streets of Dubai to the wintry turf of Edmonton, Mohsin Zaman is old hand at being a newcomer. With a voice haunted by heartbreak, curiosity and ever-bearing hope, he sings, writes, and performs with a wealth of skill and spirit far beyond his years. His album Waking Up charts his ambitious journey from the Middle East to Canada, narrating the romance, joy and nostalgia he witnessed through passing frames. Mohsin Zaman is a cherished performer and musician in the Edmonton Music scene; he bears a soul power and honesty that propels his audience into new space, changes the atmosphere of a room with a sole song, and inspires any and everyone in his path.

Exposure Photography Festival Kicks-off around Alberta

February is an exciting month – and even more so now as the much-enjoyed Exposure Photography Festival spreads across the province for the first time. Up to 2015, Exposure was only celebrated in Calgary, Banff and Canmore – but no longer!

Personally, I am thrilled that all of Alberta, particularly our capital region of Edmonton, will have the chance to host exhibitions, artist talks and other programming about photography.

Along with my tireless partner, Aaron Chute, I am curating an exhibit called InFocus. The show will feature Edmonton and area photographers under one roof in the drawing room at Harcourt House. We have such a creative community and this is a fabulous opportunity to show it off!

Not only am I working away at InFocus, but I also have a solo exhibition of my own work, entitled The Quiet Rebuild: New Portraits. These images feature volunteer models from across Canada who have endured struggle and tragedy and yet embody an incredible amount of resiliency. It is truly a pleasure to share the stories of others and be a part of their journey.
