Art in Unique Places
There are all kinds of unique spaces that need art. For me, one of those places is a government constituency office. And that just happens to be where you can find my work! For the last two months I have had two of my abstracted landscape paintings gracing the political scene.
Art doesn’t just belong in a gallery.
Up on display until June 4, 2016, these paintings have been welcoming guests, politicians and the community at the constituency office of the Honourable Richard Feehan.

Something unique about these paintings is how they were made – and with what materials. I painted on unprimed canvas, which allowed lovely saturation of the colours into the fabric. At the same time as I painted with acrylic paint, I also collaged with paper and used the acrylic gel as another layer in the work.
When I am painting, I work intuitively and follow my creative instincts. It is a process of passion and freedom.
I have so enjoyed getting to know the folks that work at this office and am curious what they will choose to hang on their walls next. I commend their vision to display original art in their office and to work with local artists. We need more of this in our culture. Forget the mass printed IKEA prints. There are an incredible number of creative people making work that is captivating and communicates deeply with viewers.

InFocus Photo Exhibit opens February 5
I am so proud of the super talented photographers that will be showcasing their work at DC3 Art Projects at the second annual InFocus Photography Exhibition. The exhibit opens in less than a month, with the whole show kicking off the day before, February 4, at the opening reception.

Halloween for InFocus Photo Exhibit
Tomorrow is Halloween and also the deadline for InFocus Photo Exhibit. If you are wise, young grasshopper, you will enter your photography for consideration in InFocus today. On the other hand, what is more haunting and terrifying than waiting till the last minute to submit?

It’s obvious you work hard for your photography…
I can see it now: Photographers running from their computers, entering their images, to their door as the doorbell rings, children chanting, “Trick or treat! Give me something good to eat!”
Whenever you enter is great – as long as you do. If the urge is there, it’s important. If you want to get your work off your computer and onto a gallery’s walls, make the time. If you believe the project you have been working on in secret is finally ready, please share it with us.

One of the things I love the most about InFocus is the passion and community that grows out of an exhibition like this. Where there is passion and innovative work, everyone benefits. Both the maker and the viewers. Community is also invaluable. Life is short and its way more fun to have other photographer friends.
Here is some info about InFocus and how to submit. We on the InFocus Team look forward to receiving your submission. Curation begins in November. I’m excited! The air is changing – winter is coming and so too is this awesome group exhibit.

When I think about it, a photographer dressing up as a photographer for Halloween is kind of silly. It’s like a dentist dressing up as a dentist. It’s like a garbage man trick or treating as a garbage man. The whole idea of Halloween is to be someone (or something) different!

One of the great things about InFocus Photo is that we invite submissions from students, armatures and professional photographers alike. We are looking for “innovative, thoughtful and provocative photography.”

For some who have never submitted to a competition like this, I say, “Give it a shot!” The worst that can happen is you learn from the process and can try again with more confidence next year. The deadline for Alberta photographers to submit photographs to InFocus Exhibit 2016 is October 31, 2015, only 15 days away! Now is not the time for procrastination; SUBMIT TODAY!
The mission of InFocus is to promote and exhibit innovative, thoughtful, and provocative photography created by Alberta’s contemporary image makers.
The call for submissions is open to professionals, armatures and students alike. We want to see forward thinking photography that capitalizes on the strengths and subtleties of the medium and takes image-making to a new level. The goal is to exhibit the best photography from the province!
Here are 15 reasons you should submit to InFocus 2016:
- See your photography hung in DC3 Art Projects, one of Edmonton’s most important artistic hubs.
- Your work will be featured in Exposure Photography Festival, which went province-wide for the first time last year.
- Sell your work during InFocus. The gallery and InFocus Team will encourage art patrons to support photographers and our creative community in this way.
